Non-stick valves
A valve that hasn’t been touched for months shouldn’t stop working because of it. At sea, that’s exactly what happens with conventional valves: seawater corrodes the internal components, deposits build up on the sliding surfaces, and the first time you try to operate it after a long lay-up, it won’t move. Sometimes the handle gives way before the valve does.
Guidi non-stick valves were developed to solve this problem. They are manufactured in bronze, patented, and type-approved by RINA and Lloyd’s Register in accordance with ISO 9093:2020. They are installed in engine rooms, on the cooling circuits of engines, generators, refrigeration systems, watermakers and air-conditioning systems. The smaller sizes are also used on internal circuits, including onboard bathrooms.
Conventional valves and non-stick valves
Ball valves and conventional valves are designed for civil and industrial hydraulic systems. In those contexts they work well, but they are not built to sit in contact with seawater for years without constant attention. In a marine environment, without regular operation, they tend to seize up: deposits form on internal components, friction increases, and over time the valve stops moving.
The difference isn’t about build quality. It’s about which environment the product was designed for.
Guidi non-stick valves are built specifically for seawater. The internal mechanism is protected by a neoprene membrane that separates it from the water and from galvanic current. The result is a valve that stays operational even after months of inactivity.
Neoprene
Neoprene is the trade name for polychloroprene, a synthetic rubber originally developed by DuPont. It resists saltwater, ageing, weathering, abrasion and compression. The chlorine content makes it flame-retardant and self-extinguishing.
In the internal mechanisms of the non-stick valves, the neoprene membrane acts as a barrier between the operating components and seawater, reducing both fouling and the risk of galvanic corrosion.
The handwheels
Non-stick valves are fitted with different handwheels depending on the model.
Models 2200, 2210, 2240 and 2250 have a glass-fibre reinforced Polyamide 6 handwheel with an open/closed position indicator and a locking pivot. The position can be secured with a safety screw.
Models 2220 and 2230 use the same PA6 handwheel but without a position indicator: an arrow indicates the opening and closing direction.
Model 2260 has a dome-profile self-extinguishing ABS handwheel with an open/closed position indicator, clearly visible from outside.
Models 2261, 2270 and 2275 use the same PA6 handwheel but without a position indicator: an arrow indicates the opening and closing direction.
2004. First models: 2200, 2210, 2220, 2230
In 2004, Guidi patents the first four non-stick valve models. All have an angled body, a geometry that, despite the non-linear flow path, ensures maximum flow rate without significant pressure losses.
Models 2200 (PN6/PN16 flanged) and 2210 (threaded, EN 10226/1 (BS 21) BSPP) are fitted with a handwheel with position indicator and comply with ISO 9093:2020. The standard specifies requirements for through-hull fittings, seacocks and metal flexible pipe connectors on small craft up to 24 m in length. On vessels over 24 metres they can be fitted without issue, following the regulations of the relevant certification bodies (RINA, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas and others).
Models 2220 (PN6/PN16 flanged) and 2230 (threaded EN 10226/1 (BS 21) BSPP) have the same hydraulic function but are fitted with a handwheel without a position indicator: an arrow indicates the opening and closing direction, not the current state. They are considerably more economical than their counterparts 2200 and 2210.
2007. Double intake valves: 2240 and 2250
In 2007, two new patented models arrive with three-way valve functionality: 2240 (PN6/PN16 flanged) and 2250 (threaded F-F-F). Both have an angled body and a position indicator.
The problem they solve is a practical one. Some boats install a separate emergency bilge circuit to drain the bilge in the event of flooding, a hull breach or a collision: the seawater circuit is closed and the emergency circuit is opened, so bilge water can be used to cool the engine while simultaneously being drained. Two circuits, two valves, more space used, more components to fit.
The double intake valve integrates all of this into a single valve body: when the seawater circuit is closed, the passage to the bilge opens automatically. The saving in components, space and installation complexity is real.
2013. The Alex valve: 2260, 2261, 2270, 2275
In 2013, Guidi patents the Alex non-stick valve (Art. 2260), designed to address three specific needs: less space, less bulk, more accessible price. Models 2261, 2270 and 2275 are subsequent developments within the same family. All have a straight body.
The geometry is different from the other models: straight through-way, opposed sleeves, 90掳 closure mechanism. The full-flow passage keeps the fluid moving continuously without turbulence. The absence of external levers reduces the footprint and makes it easy to install even in confined spaces.
2260 (threaded, EN 10226/1 (BS 21) BSPP) is the only patented model in the family and carries the handwheel with position indicator. 2270 (threaded, nickel-plated bronze), 2261 (threaded EN 10226/1 (BS 21) BSPP) and 2275 (PN6/PN16 flanged) are fitted with the directional-indicator handwheel, without a position indicator.
Common features
All models have a bronze body (2270 is nickel-plated bronze), neoprene-coated internal mechanisms, stainless steel screws and a self-extinguishing handwheel material. The internal mechanism requires minimal maintenance. Inspection does not require removing the valve from the circuit: on angled-body valves, removing the four cover bolts is sufficient; on Alex series valves, the wedge section is unscrewed.
Each valve is supplied with detailed installation, operating and maintenance instructions.

Patents
Guidi non-stick valves are patented products.
Type approvals
All Guidi non-stick valves are type-approved in accordance with ISO 9093:2020 by RINA (certificate DIP235223CS/003) and Lloyd’s Register (certificate LR2556185TA-01). The approvals cover installation on small craft with a hull length up to 24 m, as defined by ISO 8666. Above this length the valves can be installed, but follow the regulations of the relevant certification bodies. Installation must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and ISO 9093:2020.
Durability
Guidi non-stick valves are built to last, often longer than the vessel they are fitted to. Routine maintenance requirements are minimal. The modular construction makes inspection and disassembly straightforward. Bronze components are almost entirely recyclable at end of service life.
Note
Carry out all maintenance work with the vessel ashore or with the water intakes closed from the outside. If water enters the vessel during maintenance, flooding and sinking can result.
