Applications

Choose the Tirreno strainer when the water flow is angled, from the bottom towards the side. It was designed for small engines, small generators and small air-conditioning systems: its compact size makes it easy to install even where engine-room space is tight.

It also works in domestic systems, to catch larger debris such as leaves or soil. On board, it is typically fitted in the engine rooms of pleasure and commercial craft, but it performs equally well in swimming pools, quarries and drinking-water supply systems.

It is not suitable as a diesel or petrol pre-filter. Cover selection must follow the approval limits set for the relevant vessel class (see Covers section). Similar strainers in plastic or metal are available on the market, but without the performance of genuine Guidi products.

Materials

Bronze Bronze is the material that best reduces corrosion problems. For the full benefit, the whole installation should be built entirely in bronze, from the sea intake to the valve, from the fittings to the through-hull discharges, without mixing different materials.

Nickel-plated brass Nickel-plated brass is used where appearance also matters. The nickel layer offers light protection against oxidation, which is why nickel-plated fittings are common in visible installations, in domestic plumbing and in engine rooms.

Design and hydraulic characteristics

The Tirreno is a Guidi product refined over time. Its shape reduces pressure losses at the outlet, improves water flow and keeps air-bubble formation to a minimum.

Covers

Grilamid TR55 The Grilamid TR55 cover suits pleasure craft and civil installations where visual inspection of the strainer body is required. Grilamid TR55 is a transparent granular polymer: it resists chemicals and stress cracking well, absorbs very little moisture, flexes without breaking and holds up under torsion even at high temperatures.

Nickel-plated brass The nickel-plated brass cover is intended for professional and commercial vessels.

Covers open and close with the handle or nylon tool included in the box, also available separately as a spare part.

Baskets

The baskets are made of 316L stainless steel, a standard grade with a stainlessness index (PREN) between 25 and 28, suitable for seawater and for some marine applications. Compared with grades such as 304, 316L resists electrolytic corrosion better: its carbon content stays below 0.035% (standard 316 can reach 0.080%), and that is what gives it its corrosion resistance.

When a basket shows signs of corrosion, it usually means it has turned into a sacrificial anode, a sign that something in the installation is not right. In that case, check the cathodic protection system and the grounding.

Gaskets

The Tirreno strainer holds its cover with a neoprene O-ring, a synthetic rubber resistant to seawater.

Drain hole

The Tirreno has no drain hole. This hole is normally used to empty residual water when the sea-intake valves are closed or the boat is hauled out, but the Tirreno draws water from the opening at the bottom, so it does not need to be drained.

Sizing

The Tirreno strainer is available from 3/8″ to 1″. Size should follow the hydraulic and engine requirements, and the number of circuits a single strainer has to serve, while respecting the pressure-loss figures. It does not need to be oversized.

Inspection and testing

Materials are checked before machining. During production, strainers go through dimensional, assembly and packaging checks. At the end of the manufacturing cycle, an air-pressure tightness test is carried out.

The hydrostatic test uses a pressurised water-oil mixture, held for a set time under internal quality procedures, to check for leaks; it is carried out under the supervision of external laboratories. The water-oil mixture comes from recycling the machinery’s cooling water before disposal; its white colour makes leaks easier to spot.

The air test pressurises the strainer body to a set level, following internal procedures, checking for any pressure drop. It is fast, clean, and does not get the parts dirty. Because this test runs without external laboratory supervision, Guidi issues an internal certificate, though it still follows certified quality procedures.

RINA and Lloyd’s Register approval

Type approvals certify that a Guidi product has been designed, built and tested in compliance with the rules and criteria of the Italian Naval Register and Lloyd’s Register, themselves aligned with the principles of the international maritime organisation. Approvals require periodic checks to remain valid.

Durability and recyclability

Guidi designs with the full product lifecycle in mind, with growing attention to sustainability. Every strainer has a long service life, keeps its physical and mechanical properties over time, and comes with quality and functional guarantees.

Routine maintenance needs are minimal. Components separate easily during disassembly, which extends the life of the materials beyond that of the individual parts. At the end of its service life, raw-material recovery processes make the product almost entirely recyclable.

Differences from other Guidi strainers

Mediterraneo strainer The Mediterraneo strainer has a different shape and a different water-flow direction: in the Mediterraneo, water runs straight, side to side, while in the Tirreno it follows an angled path from the bottom to the side.

Ionio strainer The Ionio strainer shares the Tirreno’s shape and flow direction, with a more compact footprint than the Mediterraneo. Compared with the Tirreno, though, it is the larger-capacity version, built for more demanding systems and flow rates.

Pressure losses

Pressure loss is the drop in pressure caused by resistance and friction opposing the fluid’s motion through the circuit. Knowing its value matters for sizing pipework correctly and for defining the characteristics of the equipment that keeps fluids moving.

Pressure losses can be continuous, occurring along straight sections, or localised, at points where fittings change the direction or the cross-section of the flow: reductions, fittings, valves, strainers.

Installation

Water flow direction is fixed and follows the arrows marked on the strainer body. Depending on the installation, it can be mounted directly on a bulkhead or on brackets with a side support; either way, the chosen position must allow the basket to be removed.

Once installed, the strainer must be grounded, so the baskets are not affected by galvanic current; if the installation is not properly designed or built, the basket risks becoming an anode. Installation above the waterline is always recommended, partly as a passive safety measure, for example if the cover is not properly closed again after maintenance.

After the first few hours of operation on a new installation, check the basket for any installation residue or packaging material from new piping, and remove it.

Maintenance and spare parts

Always use genuine spare parts. They are available on the Guidi website or by contacting the company directly: covers, 316L stainless-steel basket, nylon bracket, opening handle or tool.

Covers are also sold as spare parts, and should be replaced in case of leaks, deterioration, or when the transparent material becomes too clouded from a chemical spill. It is worth replacing the O-ring together with the cover. Note: replacing the cover means moving from one approval to another.

During maintenance or cleaning, always remember to close the cover again before reopening the sea-intake valves; otherwise there is a real risk of flooding and sinking the boat, especially if the strainer sits below the waterline.

Replacing the basket takes little experience, but should always be done safely, with the sea-intake valves closed. Check the basket at regular intervals: if it is too dirty or encrusted, the strainer’s performance drops. Marine fouling is not the only cause; rubbish and plastics in seawater can also block the holes in the filtering element. The basket can be cleaned with water and compressed air.

With the engine off, close the sea-intake valves, access the basket and wash it carefully; if encrusted, use a scraper on the basket, then put it back in place. Check that the gaskets are intact and reposition them correctly in their seat; if worn or in doubt, replace them with genuine parts.

Before restarting the circuit, make sure the cover is properly closed on the strainer body, then reopen the sea-intake valves.
